Parks Leads the Pack in Vilamoura's Old Course Opener, Gal Chips in Close Behind

The Old Course in Vilamoura saw Parks set the early pace with a smooth 87 gross and 34 Stableford points, while Gal kept the pressure with a late surge and a £20 prize for closest to the pin. The trip is just beginning but the leaderboard is already stirring.

Parks Sets the Standard with a Spotless Start

In the opening round of this three-day escapade on the Frank Pennink-designed Old Course, Parks announced arrival with a tidy 87 gross and 34 Stableford points. Not only did this score secure top spot, but it also served as the round’s best gross – a neat double that suggests Parks was rarely caught off guard by those mature pine-lined fairways.

As classic Old Course challenges loomed, Parks navigated the course’s demands like a seasoned diplomat, carefully avoiding the missteps that would soon catch others off guard. The par-73 layout seemingly bent to Parks’ will, setting a brand-new bar for the competition ahead.

Gal Holds Early Command but Finds Finishing Touch Elusive

Gal was the early bird on the leaderboard, leading after three holes with six points and maintaining the front runner position through half the round. The precision demanded by holes such as the third and the famously tricky sixth proved no problem; Gal rallied consistently, collecting eight pars along the way, a nod to steady accuracy over flair.

By the turn and even heading into the last few holes, Gal was right in the thick of it, edging ahead with 34 Stableford points, tying with Parks. Despite pushing hard on the closing stretch, it was Parks’ steadier final moves that edged the win. Gal, however, left with a £20 bounty for the closest to the pin — not a bad consolation prize for keeping the excitement alive.
